Bumper Cook Book Review and Giveaway: French Regional Food and Comfort.

Bonjour! This month's cook book reviews is reviewing two books: French Regional Food by Joel Robuchon and Comfort: Recipes to Warm The Heart And Feed The Soul. Many thanks to Francis Lincoln Publishers for my review copies.

French Regional Food by Joel Robuchon and Loic Bienassis is an encyclopedia sort of cook book, it's huge! A sleek front cover outlining the several regions in France with colourful illustrations of fruits often eaten in France. The intent of this book, according to Loic Bienassis is to highlight the "pays" of France; areas that might be thought of as  Native region or "homeland" and an area defined by its strong cultural region. There are in total 28 regions covered many which foodies should be aware or familiar such as Champagne-Ardennes, Lorraine, Normandy and Dauphine. This book is beautifully illustrated too, of the French regions, food and non-food related which gave me a nostalgic reminder of my trip to France. Each chapter is thoroughly introduced sharing it's history, typical ingredient or well-known dishes and the most important part, the recipes that follow after. There is such a large amount of recipes shared in this book and each dish has a level of difficulty and preparation time. The recipes appeared complicated to me, even recipes such as pommel rennais has a level difficulty of 1 star (easy) but takes a long time to cook (1 hour and 15 minutes). The recipes in this book are appalling to the more experience cook and when I get the time I would like to try the following recipes: Pithiviers, Grantinee des Halles (Onion Soup) and Couptade (traditional southern French dessert).  The recipe I tried Toffailles, means stewed or braised using the ingredients of potato, bacon and onion. Whilst this dish is not a looker, I thoroughly enjoyed the simplicity of this dish.

This cookery book gets a 3/5 star rating- recipes good, but on the whole, this book was not for me due to the length of time the majority of the recipes require.

Comfort: Recipes To Warm The Heart And Feed The Soul by Carolyn Caldicott is exactly what to states on the title provides comforting recipes. A compact book and beautifully illustrated, although not every recipe is illustrated there is enough photos to keep you cooling. This book is divided into 7 chapters and covers everything from Breakfast Worth Getting Up For, Hearty Meals for Friends and Family and Perfect Puddings. Stand out recipes include: Honey Toasted Nut and Seed Granola, Homemade Beef Burgers With Melted Mozzarella, Beetroot and Horseradish Mayo And Sweet Potato Chips and Dark Chocolate Dipped Honey Nut Bites. I made a couple of recipes from this book, lemon drizzle cake and Eggy Bread Two Ways. I found the recipes easy to follow and both my lemon drizzle cake and eggy bread two ways turned out to be amazing.

Lemon Drizzle cake.
This cookery book gets a 4 star rating, recipes are easy to follow, beautifully illustrated photos and is ideal for a beginner/moderate cook.

Recipe for Eggy Bread, Per Person
1 large free-range egg
1 generous tablespoon whole milk
a pinch of salt
2 thick slices of good quality crusty white bread
a generous knob of butter

Method
Streaky bacon grilled until crisp, maple syrup or cinnamon sugar to serve.
Whisk the eggs and milk together until fluffy and season to taste. Place the bread in a shallow flat dish and coat both sides with the egg mixture. Leave to stand for a few minutes to allow the egg to soak into the bread.
Melt the butter in a non-stick frying pan, when the butter starts to foam, add the eggy bread and fry until golden brown on both sides. Serve immediately with crispy bacon, jam or marmalade.
